The Lake Martin Dragon Boat Race is an exciting, action-packed event that perfectly blends competition and community. With origins dating back 2,300 years, dragon boat racing features long, colorful boats powered by a team of paddlers moving in unison to the beat of a drum. Of course, Lake Martin put its own local spin on this global tradition with fun from start to finish all while fundraising for a good cause.
Teams consist of paddlers, a steerperson, and a drummer setting the rhythm. Many teams in this year’s race represented our local community, from organizations and businesses to local schools, welcoming all ages and abilities. Racing side-by-side, teams must work together in the ultimate test of coordination, strength, and speed.
While the competition is fierce, it’s a family-friendly, welcoming atmosphere for those racing and cheering from the shorelines at beautiful Wind Creek State Park. It’s the perfect place for spectators to watch the races, enjoy lake scenery, and soak in the excitement of community and fellowship. There are also a variety of vendors, food trucks, and activities at Wind Creek to enjoy in between races.
While dragon boat races happen across the country, Lake Martin’s Dragon Boat Race is unique because it is truly a community event. Explore Lake Martin partners with other local organizations like the Alexander City Chamber of Commerce and the Lake Martin-Dadeville Area Chamber of Commerce to make this possible. This year, we had both participants and visitors from across the southeast at the races. In addition, we helped raise $3,890.00 for the Tallapoosa Caring Refuge, a nonprofit organization that financially supports cancer patients within the county.
