Lake Martin Centennial

Celebrating 100 Years of Lake Martin

From scenic boat rides and rival outdoor recreation to champion bass fishing and award-winning cuisine, we’re celebrating all things Lake Martin in 2026. For 100 years, Lake Martin has empowered our community, creating not only nationally recognized recreation opportunities, but also economic growth and industry that has sustained the test of time. As Alabama’s only “Treasured Lake,” Lake Martin is known for its exceptional water quality, natural beauty, and ecological significance. But more than that, Lake Martin gives life to one-of-a-kind experiences on and off the water for residents and visitors alike.

Join us in celebrating 100 years of our beautiful Lake Martin – a place where relaxation meets recreation, where growth meets sustainability, and above all, a place where memories are made.

History of Martin Dam

After completion in 1926, the Thomas Wesley Martin Dam transformed the Tallapoosa River, creating Lake Martin as we know it today – generating 154,200 kilowatts of hydroelectric power, and creating multiple outdoor recreational opportunities. Construction on the 168-foot high dam began in 1923, stretching 2,000 feet across the Tallapoosa River gorge at Cherokee Bluffs using 431,000 yards of concrete. While the dam was completed in 1926, Lake Martin reached full capacity on April 23, 1928, after heavy rains forced the Alabama Power Company to open several of 20 floodgates for the first time.
