CRATA Overlook Fire Tower Now Open: A Scenic Tribute to Jimmy K. Lanier

Lake Martin, AL – Nov, 10, 2025 – Lake Martin visitors and locals alike now have another reason to stop and take in the incredible scenic lake views. On Friday, Nov. 7, the Cherokee Ridge Alpine Trail Association (CRATA) dedicated the new fire tower at Overlook Park to visionary founding member, Jimmy K. Lanier – a man whose passion for Alabama’s outdoors helped make Lake Martin’s trail system what it is today.

Lanier’s vision and dedication helped create miles of scenic hiking opportunities for adventurers of all ages, and his love for the land continues to inspire CRATA’s work. The newly named Jimmy K. Lanier Overlook Fire Tower stands as a lasting tribute to his legacy, offering one of the most breathtaking panoramic views of Lake Martin.

The dedication ceremony brought together community members and representatives from local and state organizations, including Steve Forehand, Board Member of Lake Martin Resource Association, Chris Blankenship, Commissioner of the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, and Dr. Graham Sisson, Chair of the Alabama Trails Commission. Guests celebrated Lanier’s legacy, enjoyed the breathtaking views, and learned more about the ongoing efforts to maintain and expand the trails that make Lake Martin such a unique destination for outdoor enthusiasts.

This project culminated in the disassembly, transport from Virginia, and full restoration of a 110-foot-tall, 80+ year-old fire lookout tower. Set on CRATA-owned land just a few hundred yards from Overlook Park, the tower offers unparalleled views of Cherokee Bluffs and the surrounding trails.

Now officially open to the public, visitors can hike to the tower year-round to enjoy the stunning scenery. The tower is located at 1791 Overlook Dr., Dadeville, AL 36853. To learn more about Lake Martin’s trails, check out https://explorelakemartin.com/scavenger-hunts-and-trails/.
