Trails at Smith Mountain Fire Tower
Walker Bynum Tower Trail
- Starting at the parking lot, you’ll face a steep 0.4-mile climb to reach the base of the tower. On the west side of the tower, a sign directs you to the return trail back to the parking area. The entire hike is 1.0 mile.
Lakeshore Trail
- The Lakeshore Trail total length is 2.4 miles. Near the mountain top, the trail takes a steep descent, then gradually follows the undeveloped shores of Lake Martin. The trail loops back to the parking lot through a mix of hardwood and pine forest.
Little Smith Trail
Little Smith trail is 2.6 miles long.
WARNING: This trail is spectacular for its views and rock formations, but is also the most difficult and potentially dangerous. At times the trail goes along sheer cliffs where a single misstep could have dire consequences. Do not attempt this trail unless you are sure-footed and in better than average physical condition. This is NOT a trail for small kids. For this reason we have decided to exclude this trail from the hiking challenge. Hike at your own risk.
Island Hop/Boat Dock Trail
- From the parking lot, it’s about 1.4 miles to the boat dock. When Lake Martin is lowered at winter pool levels, you can extend your hike by an additional quarter mile, crossing a series of islands that are submerged when at full pool. The return trail from the boat dock back to the parking lot is roughly 1.2 miles.
