Trails at Yates Lake

John B. Scott Forever Wild Trail
  • A 4.7 mile hike along the Tallapoosa River and Yates Lake, featuring old-growth hardwoods and creeks. The trail is easy to moderate in difficulty and offers rich wildlife experiences, including Bald Eagles and Geese. Named after John B. Scott, a key figure in Alabama’s conservation efforts, it highlights the state’s natural beauty and diverse ecosystems.
Cherokee Bluff Dam Railroad Trail
  • This trail follows the old railroad bed used in the 1920’s to build Martin Dam. Hikers can choose between the Highline or Lowline routes, leading to Saddle Rock Mountain, the highest point in Elmore County. Along the way, you will be able to see remnants of the old railroad including ruts, coal piles, and bridge foundations, all set in a pristine forest.
  • The Lowline Railroad Trail is currently a 2.7-mile out-and-back hike, totaling 5.4 miles, ending at Channahatchee Creek, where there is no dry crossing. A project is underway to expand the trail system on the Yates Forever Wild property. Once Phase 1 is completed, the Dam Railroad Trail will connect to a new trail running along the creek, which will lead to a new parking lot on Goldmine Road. More updates on the trails and parking lot will be provided soon.

Both of these trails are apart of the Piedmont Plateau Birding Trails.
