From the Pre-Colonial era to present day, the Lake Martin area has experienced historic change. In fact, the area has hosted Native American towns, legendary battles, frontier settlements, a gold rush, ferries and grist mills, business visionaries, textile mills, and three major hydroelectric dams – with the Tallapoosa River flowing 66 miles through the heart of it all. However, no event has had a more lasting economic effect than the construction of Martin Dam in 1926, which gave life to Lake Martin’s 880 miles of shoreline, vastly located within Tallapoosa County.
Today, Lake Martin, often called Alabama’s “Crown Jewel” and the state’s only Treasured Lake, is a prime destination for water sports and outdoor recreation. But it’s also a place rich with history, offering visitors the chance to discover Lake Martin’s past through historic landmarks.
Embark on a journey through time and discover Lake Martin’s historic landmarks.
Visit the Hank Williams Cabin
The famed country music star, Hank Williams, was a frequent visitor to Tallapoosa County and the Lake Martin area. During one of his infamous visits to the cabin on Lake Martin’s shorelines, Hank was inspired to write his famous song ‘Kowaliga’.
Though visitors can’t access the cabin itself, the cabin can be seen from the lake. The cabin is a part of local history and is cherished by those who appreciate the connection between the artist and the area. The best way to see the cabin is by boat or from a nearby vantage point along the shore. For those wanting to learn more about Hank Williams’ connection to the Lake Martin area, a visit to the nearby Kowaliga Restaurant, named after the song, is a great addition to your trip.
Walk the Battlefield at Horseshoe Bend National Military Park
In the early morning on March 27, 1814, General Andrew Jackson and an army of over three thousand attacked the Red Stick Creek village of Tohopeka, tragically known today as the Battle of Horseshoe Bend. Approximately 1,000 Redstick warriors and an unknown number of women and children were behind a log barricade stretching across a bend in the Tallapoosa River. By the end of the day, most of the Red Sticks were dead.
Today, Horseshoe Bend National Military Park offers visitors the opportunity to learn about the Creek War, walk the battlefield, and enjoy recreational opportunities in a beautiful, historic location. The park is open daily from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with the exception of major holidays.
